Young Adults Driving While Intoxicated

Select a County
Measurement Period: 2020
This indicator shows the arrest rate for driving while intoxicated (DWI) among young adults aged 16 to 21 years.

Why is this important?

Drivers under 21 with a blood alcohol content (BAC) above .01% are guilty of driving under the influence. At all BAC levels, the risk of involvement in a motor vehicle crash is greater for teens than for older drivers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens. Graduated Drivers Licensing laws have been proven effective in reducing fatal and injury crashes among teen drivers.
